To prevent iodine deficiency
The thyroid gland has a significant influence on the metabolism of the human body through the production of hormones. In order to produce vital hormones, the thyroid gland needs iodine from food. If the body is supplied with too little iodine through food (Germany is one of the so-called iodine-deficient areas), the thyroid gland can become greatly enlarged, leading to the formation of a goiter and ultimately to a disruption of the entire metabolism. There is an increased need for iodine during pregnancy in particular, so an adequate iodine intake is particularly important to prevent a deficiency.
