What METADOXIL is and what it is used for

METADOXIL contains the active substance metadoxine, which is used in case of alcohol poisoning. This medicine lowers the amount of alcohol in the blood and helps to eliminate it in the urine.

METADOXIL tablets are used as an adjunctive medicine to relieve symptoms caused by chronic ethyl alcohol poisoning and to treat alcohol-induced liver disease.

If your condition has not improved or even worsened within 7 days, you must consult a doctor.

What you need to know before taking METADOXIL

METADOXIL should not be used:

- if you are allergic to methadoxin or any of the excipients of this medicine (they are listed in section 6);

- if you are breast-feeding a baby (see subsection "Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility").

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking METADOXIL

Use this medicine with caution and tell your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease and it is being treated with levodopa, as methadoxin may weaken the effect of this medicine (see the subsection "Other medicines and METADOXIL").

For children and teenagers

METADOXIL is not recommended for children and adolescents.

Other medicines and METADOXIL

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, or if you are not sure.

Use this medicine with caution and tell your doctor if you have Parkinson's disease and are being treated with levodopa, as methadoxin may make this medicine less effective.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility

If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, METADOXIL can only be used if absolutely necessary and only under the direct supervision of a doctor.

Breastfeeding period

Do not use METADOXIL if you are breast-feeding a baby, as methadoxin reduces the amount of a hormone called prolactin in the blood (causing a hypoprolactinemic effect) (see the subsection "Do not use METADOXIL").

Driving and machine control

METADOXIL does not affect the ability to drive and use machines.

How to take METADOXIL
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

For adults

For chronic alcohol poisoning and alcohol-induced liver disease, the recommended daily dose is two 500 mg tablets.

For elderly people

Elderly people can be treated with METADOXIL safely, there is no need to change the dose.

For patients with impaired liver function

For liver disease such as alcoholic liver disease, the recommended dose of METADOXIL can be used. Patients with severe liver dysfunction are advised not to take this medicine for a long time.

For patients with impaired renal function

There is no experience of treatment with METADOXIL in patients with impaired renal function. Given the fact that the drug is partially excreted from the body through the kidneys, these patients are advised to reduce the dose and not to take this drug for a long time.

Use in children and adolescents

METADOXIL is not recommended for use in children and adolescents, as safety and effectiveness have not been studied for them

Duration of treatment

If the condition has improved after 7 days of using METADOXIL, the treatment can be continued for 2-3 months if necessary. It can be continued up to 6 months after consultation with the doctor.

What to do if you overdose on METADOXIL?

Cases of overdose are unknown.

If you have taken too much METADOXIL at once, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.

If you forget to take METADOXIL

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose
